18" finished block (18 1/2" unfinished)

INGREDIENTS

From Snow (9900 11), cut:
{A} (5) 1½” x 21” strips
{B} (4) 3½” squares
{D} (2) 1½” x 18½” strips
{E}  (2) 2” x 18½” strips

From Ruby Ice (9900 169), cut:
{A} (4) 1½” x 21” strips
{C} (12) 1½” x 3½” strips
{D} (4) 1½” x 18½” strips

From Scarlet (9900 47), cut:
{A} (3) 1½” x 21” strips

INSTRUCTIONS

The fair isle pattern will be created using three different strip sets.

STEP 1. MAKE STRIP SETS
To make strip set A, join a 1½” x 21” background strip to each side of a 1½” x 21” aqua strip pressing the seam open. Your strip set should measure 3½” wide. MAKE 2 then subcut into (18) 1½” sections.

To make strip set B, join a 1½” x 21” aqua strip to each side of a 1½” x 21” red strip pressing the seam open. Your strip set should measure 3½” wide.
MAKE 1 then subcut into (14) 1½” sections.
* You will use every scrap of the strip set so may need to cut additional 1½” squares of background and aqua from your fabric.

To make strip set C, join a 1½” x 21” red strip to each side of a 1½” x 21” bacground strip pressing the seam open. Your strip set should measure 3½” wide.
MAKE 1 then subcut into (3) 1½” sections.

STEP 2. MAKE MIDDLE ROW
To make the middle row, make a nine-patch by joining a section A unit to the top and bottom of a section C unit, pressing as directed (>). MAKE 3.

Alternate with the (4) 3½” background squares,  joining them together and pressing to away from the nine-patches. Trim to 18½” wide, centering the motifs, then join a 1½” x 18½” background piece to the top and bottom.

STEP 3. MAKE OUTER ROW

To make the outer rows, make a nine-patch by joining a section A unit to each side of a section B unit. MAKE 4.

Next make a partial nine-patch by joining a section A unit to a section B unit. MAKE 4

Then make a dot unit by joining a 1½” x 3½” aqua piece to each side of a section B unit. MAKE 6

To make a row, alternate two nine-patches and three dot units, then join, pressing towards the dots. Add a partial nine patch to each end. Trim to 18½” wide, centring the motifs, then join a 1½” x 18½” aqua piece to the top and bottom. MAKE 2

STEP 4. ASSEMBLE THE BLOCK

To assemble the block, join the three rows together then add a 2” x 18½” background piece to the top and bottom.

Your block should measure 18½” square.
