Starlite Quilt

Hi, Bakers! I’m Heather Long of Coffee and Quilts and I’m thrilled to be sharing another quilt here at the Moda Bake Shop. This is my Starlite quilt, shown here in Nova fabrics by Basic Grey. A jelly roll and some background fabric combine to make these quick blocks. The light fabric in the half-square triangles reminded me of stars in the night sky. My mother-in-law thinks they look like butterflies fluttering across the quilt.

This quilt/project finishes at 52" x 68". 1 x Jelly Roll® {Nova by Basic Grey} 1 1/8 yards background fabric {Moda Bella Solids 9900-60 Ivory} 1 yard border fabric {Nova by Basic Grey 30580-19} 3 1/4 yards backing fabric {Nova by Basic Grey 30586-19} 1/2 yard binding fabric {Nova by Basic Grey 30150-505} {optional} An Easy Angle Ruler makes cutting Jelly Roll strips into half-square triangles a cinch, but I share a method that doesn't require it. Cutting: From each of (35) jelly roll strips: Cut (4) 2 1/2” x 4 1/2” units Cut (4) 2 1/2” x 2 1/2” units *if using Easy Angle ruler, cut (1) 2 1/2” x 6 1/2” units OR *if drawing lines for HST's, cut (2) 2 1/2” x 3 1/4” units From cream fabric: Cut (6) 2 1/2” x WOF strips *if using Easy Angle ruler, cut (35) 2 1/2” x 6 1/2” units OR *if drawing lines for HST's, cut (70) 2 1/2” x 3 1/4” units For borders: From cream fabric: Cut (6) strips 2 1/2” x WOF, Join at short ends and subcut (2) 2 1/2” x 56 1/2” and (2) 2 1/2” x 44 1/2” From outer border fabric: Cut (6) strips 4 1/2” x WOF Join at short ends and subcut (2) 4 1/2” x 60 1/2” and (2) 4 1/2” x 52 1/2” For binding: Cut (7) 2 1/4” x WOF strips or follow instructions for bias binding   Piecing: For blocks: Make HSTs 2 methods – Easy Angle Ruler – Place one cream 2 1/2” x 6 1/2” and one jelly roll 2 1/2” x 6 1/2” unit right sides together. Use Easy Angle Ruler to cut (4) pairs of triangles. Sew together along long edge to make (4) 2 1/2” HSTs Draw lines – using 45-degree line on a ruler, draw (2) diagonal lines on wrong side of (2) cream 2 1/2” x 3 1/4” units as shown. Place a cream 2 1/2” x 3 1/4” unit right sides together with a jelly roll 2 1/2” x 3 1/4” unit. Sew on drawn lines, then cut apart. Press HSTs towards jelly roll fabric. Layout pieces of the block. Sew HST's to 2 1/2” squares, lining up as shown. Press towards jelly roll fabric. (Make sure you orient all the units the same way or your block won't look right.) Sew units completed above to 2 1/2” x 4 1/2” rectangles. Press towards rectangles. Arrange 4 units completed above into a block as shown and sew together. The seams all nest nicely. Make 35 blocks. Arrange blocks into 7 rows of 5 blocks. Sew rows of blocks together, then sew rows together. Press well. Attach cream inner borders to quilt sides, then top and bottom. Repeat for outer border. Optional: Take a swirly picture of your quilt top and post it on social media. Layer, baste, and quilt as desired. Bind and enjoy! Optional: drape over your mother-in-law's couch to take some staging photos. Agree that it really does look good with her decor and let the quilt live at her house (temporarily). Optional: decide to make a second version in Lollipop Garden by Lella Boutique. This quilt finishes at 52" x 68". I hope you enjoy this quilt pattern as much as I do and as much as my wonderful mother-in-law does! Please share it with me on social media using hashtag #starlitequilt and tag me @coffee_and_quilts.
