What is EQ8?

Electric Quilt 8 (or EQ8) is the industry’s leading quilt design software that let’s you envision your quilt top before cutting into your fabric! Start by selecting a pieced or appliqued block from the over 6,000 included designs in the library or draw your own unique block. Next choose the size and layout of your quilt. Will it be an on-point baby quilt, a king-sized strip quilt, or a totally custom layout? Then play with color using the 6,000+ pre-loaded fabrics or import your own to design a quilt using your stash! When you are ready to make your quilt, you can print out yardage requirements for the whole quilt as well as rotary cutting charts, foundation paper piecing patterns, and templates for each block. EQ makes it easy to go from the quilt in your head to the quilt on your bed!

EQ software is used around the world by quilters of all skill levels and experience! You don’t have to be a professional quilt designer to use or enjoy EQ8 (although many professionals do use the software). Every quilter has at least one quilt where they loved all the fabrics but then didn’t love how they came together in the final quilt. Because EQ lets you import and correctly scale your own fabrics you can see exactly how your quilt will look, making changes until you know you have a design that you’ll love! You can save multiple versions of a quilt as well, so that you can see how your design progresses and go back to a previous layout whenever you want.

The Story of EQ

The Electric Quilt Company got its start in the early 1990s when Dean Neumann, then a math professor at Bowling Green State University, married Penny McMorris, a corporate art curator and producer/host of several PBS series on quilting. Both loved quilts and Dean had an idea he hoped might help quiltmakers develop their design ideas on-screen. As Penny worked on a new television series, Dean spent spare time teaching himself programming, then developed the first Electric Quilt software program. Dean’s program debuted on a segment of Penny’s “Great American Quilt” program (WBGU-TV) in 1991. Viewers from across the country called the television station and Penny and Dean collected their names. The Electric Quilt Company was born! There have been 8 versions of EQ software, each adding new and exciting features to help quilters bring their designs to life in fabric and thread.
